Soft Tissue Management (Gum Therapy)

We don’t just take care of your teeth at the office of Dr. Reichman; we also take care of the tissues, gums, and bones that support them! Periodontal disease, or gum disease, is a serious degenerative disorder that can harm the gums, bones, tissues, and teeth of the mouth. Caused by an accumulation of plaque and calculus, periodontal disease can even result in the loss of bone structure, gums, and teeth if left untreated. Some studies have also linked untreated periodontal disease with:

  • Diabetes
  • Stroke
  • High blood pressure
  • Pregnancy complications
  • Heart disease

The soft tissue management program at our Stony Brook office is designed to halt the progression of periodontal disease and help you enjoy a healthier, more radiant smile. Depending on the level of periodontal disease, we may recommend several different periodontal treatments, including deep cleanings (scaling and root planing), antibiotic therapy, or periodontal surgery.

To maintain a healthy smile free of periodontal disease, it is important to brush and floss daily and visit the dentist for your cleanings and exams at least once every six months. We provide Oxyfresh® oral hygiene products and the Oral-B® Triumph toothbrush at our office to help you stave off gum disease. If you experience any bleeding, swelling, or redness of the gums, contact us as soon as possible as these are some of the signs of periodontal disease. We promise to do everything in our power to help you return to optimal oral health.
